Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs prolonged their winning streak in away games in the Premier League and delivered Everton their initial loss at their new home.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having departed their historic home behind after 133 years at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman struck twice from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before Pape Matar Sarr - assisted by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - headed home a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, failed to convert a handful of chances, while Vicario made a succession of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five away games without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, advising Craig Pawson to check the score on the screen and the referee decided that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: The defender fulfils role at both ends of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere attempts on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was failed to make much of an impact before being substituted for Richarlison after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Tottenham's opening strike came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder directing the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was equally outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the novelty may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the exits after the midfielder's third for Tottenham.

The break in the team's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their striker situation will be.

Beto and Thierno Barry - the Everton's pair of established centre-forwards - had scored only one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from close range, despite having space and time to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, as well, failed to influence the game after replacing the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly delivered threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.

The Toffees: The team head to Sunderland in the Premier League on early November at 8 PM.

Tottenham: Spurs go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round Carabao Cup tie against Newcastle.
